This half-day seminar prepares law enforcement professionals to communicate effectively with the media and the public during both routine operations and critical incidents. Participants will learn how strategic communication, accuracy, transparency, and word choice directly influence public trust, organizational credibility, and community understanding. Using real-world case studies, current incident examples, and hands-on practice, this course explores how agencies can serve as reliable sources of information, manage evolving facts, and make intentional decisions about interviews, written statements, and press conferences. Whether you are a full-time PIO or if that is one of your auxiliary duties, special emphasis is placed on message planning, controlling interviews, correcting misinformation, and understanding media expectations in today’s high-pressure, fast-paced, social-media-dominated environments. Participants will leave with a practical framework for deciding how, when and where to communicate media; tools to plan interviews, press conferences, and public statements effectively; improved confidence in delivering clear, accurate and authentic messages on camera; and a deeper understanding of how word choice, tone, and timing shape public perception and trust.
