Geared toward all first responders, this presentation focuses on an active shooter/mass shooting event. This case study covers an event where twenty people were shot & three killed (not including the suspect). Officers engaged the suspect in a firefight and none of the LE personnel were hit. The suspect breached all security measures and used an AK-47 vs. the Officers returning fire with handguns. This occurred at an open air event (food and entertainment) that brings 100,000 people to the event over a weekend each summer.

The presentation covers the background of the event, suspect profile/analysis, the shooting event and the response by public safety. The FBI provided a significant level of assistance (evidence teams and behavioral analysis review of social media, electronic footprint and characteristics) and how the relationship worked between local and federal agencies. The impacts of such an event to the agency, resources required and things we didn’t consider in community healing. This provides a lot of what went right and areas to consider for improvement. It speaks to the training ahead of time and was the response congruent with that training.
