Grounded in current U.S. Department of Justice ADA regulations, this seminar provides an up-to-date overview of recent regulatory changes, effective dates, and technical requirements for newly designed, constructed, or altered facilities. Participants will gain practical insight into building accessibility standards and key considerations for City and Town governments as they evaluate and implement ADA compliance efforts. This seminar also reinforces the Department of Justice recommendation that all entities — regardless of size — designate an ADA Coordinator or liaison, and explores the responsibilities associated with that role. Key topics that will be covered include:
- Planning and coordinating overall ADA compliance efforts
- Self-evaluations, transition plans, and grievance procedures
- Reasonable accommodations, effective communication, and service animals
- Employer responsibilities, non-discriminatory hiring, and essential job functions
- Building alterations and requirements for new vs. existing facilities
- Infrastructure access and Public Rights-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG)
- Disability documentation, safety considerations, and core ADA legal principles
